In order to survive and advance in the increasingly fierce market competition, modern manufacturing enterprises should use advanced design methods to shorten product design and development cycle and improve the quality of product design. The CAD system has become an indispensable tool to improve the design efficiency for a modern mechanical enterprise with capability of design. However, the present CAD system provides the application of some techniques, such as feature modeling, parametric modeling, but the enterprises’ design knowledge and experience are not well integrated to support the part design, which results in the disability of meeting the enterprises’ requirements on improving the design efficiency and quality.Combined with the design method and process of parts, this paper develops a feature-based part intelligent design system based on the present feature-based CAD technology and artificial intelligence technology. This system can support feature-level design reusing and automatic modeling, and realize the intelligent design of parts’ structure rapidly.Firstly, the part design process is deeply analyzed from the layer of design task combining with the feature modeling technology and the application process of CBR technology. Then the design process model of part intelligent design system is defined, and a functional model of feature-based part intelligent design system is proposed.Secondly, by analyzing UDF solid modeling method, UDF building can be divided into three stages including geometric definition, parameter definition and constraint definition. The aggregation features formed by the UDF and its engineering semantics is represented with object-oriented technology. Besides, the sort management and storage of aggregation features are studied in this paper, and the design case library of aggregation features is created as well.Furthermore, the similar case solution using the nearest neighbor method is proposed on the basis of the CBR aggregation features reuse. Mapping relationship can be built between part design requirements and aggregation features’ attributes, which can be acted as the search items of CBR. Various similarity function algorithm is given according to the basic principles of the nearest neighbor method, and the algorithm of revising the aggregation features attributes weights using the part design requirements weights is proposed. To guarantee the quality of part design, the design objects are checked and evaluated using the model check toolsFinally, combined with the professional knowledge of connecting rod design, this paper has developed and validated the professional CAD design system using the Pro/Toolkit, which is the secondary development interface of Pro/Engineer.
