ARToolkit-based Target Tracking And Animation Fusion Technology

Augmented Reality (Augmented Reality, referred to as AR) is a new field of research developed based on Virtual Reality (Virtual Reality, VR). AR technology can effectively provide a realistic environment annotation to help users to cognize this certain scene better. It includes two key steps:target tracking and fusion of the virtual.The ARToolKit is a software development tool which widely used in the field of AR. For the demand of Fun Teaching, this paper introduces the design and development of a Fun Teaching System by using AR. The main contents include:(1) By using maya3D technology for realistic animation characters and scenes; it is realized that the characters and scenes for fun teaching system model.(2) ARToolKit-based target tracking technology. First design a visual sign which is easy for feature extraction. Then, based on the sign, using image processing method to extract the sign’s frame and feature points. The next, use ARToolki to propose a predictive tracking algorithm, for the sign’s motion prediction and tracking. This method improves the real time performance of target tracking algorithm.(3) By using animation fusion technology to achieve the fusion of real scene and virtual objects and provide intuitive visual effect. First compute real camera parameters and distortion factor, and then use distortion factor to correct real scene video. Finally, use Maya and ARToolKit to trigger a piece of computer animation according to captured features.Experimental results show that target tracking algorithm and animation fusion technology improve the visual quality of Fun Teaching System, activate students’ interests, and also advance the fun of teaching.
