With the rapid development of wireless communication technology and computer network technology, it promotes the development of mobile communication network strongly. Mobile multi-hop network (MANET, Mobile Ad hoc Network) came into being. In contrast with the traditional wireless network with base station, MANET does not have a center. It’s also called Ad hoc networks. And Wireless Sensor Network is a typical representive of the MANET and becomes current focus for researchers. It has the characteristics of low-power, low-cost, distributed and self-organizing and has brought a revolution in information perception. WSN is a large group of static or mobile nodes distributed in the object which is monitored by these nodes. Network life cycle depends on the network node energy consumption. The energy consumption of nodes in the network are inevitably associated with the operation between nodes and itself. And those operations are eventually reflected by routing protocols in MANET. As a concequence, how to improve the existing routing protocols and achieve best network performance becomes very important. This paper studies the node routing policy in network and takes into account the power consumption. First, based on the summary of the wireless MANET multi-hop routing protocol classification, the paper highlights the AODV(Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector Routing Protocol) and OLSR(Optimized Link State Routing Protocol) research. Second, a detailed comparision and analysis of network simulation software has been made and the core module of OPNET that is OPNET Modeler has been described. Then, this paper uses OPNET simulation tools to build small and medium-scale and large-scale network respectively compares the performance of default routing protocol and improved routing protocol and studies the network delay, throughput and packet loss ratio. At last, an instance of a wireless sensor monitoring network with12Imote2nodes has been given. Studies have shown that improved typical routing protocol including AODV protocol and OLSR protocol in this paper has superior performance compared to the default protocol in terms of network delay, throughput, packet loss ratio and network lifetime. Future, the improved protocol can be referenced for a wireless network routing applications.
