Wireless sensor networks are composed of a large amount of sensor nodes which are lowpowered, small, with limited processing and computing resource. The energy of the sensor nodesare very limited, and the environment of sensor networks is very difficult to recharge the battery. For this reason, energy efficiency became the hot research area for wireless sensor networks.Networking protocol is the basis of the wireless sensor network, so it is one of the keytechnologies of wireless sensor networks. In order to design the energy-efficient network routing protocols, we describe and analyze theclustering algorithm LEACH, meanwhile the paper propose a new algorithm LEACH-SC. Thealgorithm add to the remaining energy and the distribution density of the node, the LEACH-SCprotocol make up for some of the inadequacies of the LEACH protocol. Simulation resultsshowed that LEACH-SC protocol is much more efficient than the LEACH protocol. Then we study the existing solutions of routing holes problem in wireless sensor. Afteranalyzing the shortcomings of these solutions, we propose a new algorithm named NEW-GPSR,which is based on the geographic routing protocol GPSR algorithm. We use the software NS2tosimulate the GPSR and NEW-GPSR. Simulation results showed that the system lifetime ofwireless sensor networks is significantly improved.
