The wireless multimedia sensor networks is a new type sensor networks whichcan perceive multimedia information such as audio, video as well as image. In theresearch branches of WMSN, routing protocol is one of dominant technologies. However, routing holes phenomenon which impacted by environment is notinevitable. That is to say, some data in the network may be losing which not onlywastes finite network resources, but also will lead to the destruction of effectivecoverage and link of the network. This phenomenon is to be avoided especially inthe WMSN for specific tasks, because communication fails of some monitoring datawill lead the fail of the whole task.To solve the problem of geographic routing holes, this research proposes aneffective holes roundabout algorithm BHRGR. To the features of enormous amountof data traffic in wireless multimedia sensor networks, BHRGR takes these steps tosolve the problem of routing holes. Firstly, this scheme ascertains the position ofholes by sending an observer packet in advance to get the information of nodes onthe boundary of a hole. Then, it constructs a virtual rectangle which covers the holeto engender dynamic intermediate destination nodes. Finally, an efficient bypassingthe hole route is formed.Through simulation experiments, we compare and analyze BHRGR algorithmwith classic GPSR and Virtual Circle on the three important performance parameters, such as the average number of hops performance, average rate of successful transferof packets and energy consumption differences in the process of data packettransmission to the target area by nodes. The experimental results show that theBHRGR algorithm can effectively reduce the routing average hops and nodes’energy consumption, enhance the rate of successful transfer of packets and evenavoid the problem of data congestion on holes boundary and decreases holesdiffusion problems. From the view of energy consumption of the entire network, it is safe to say that the proposed protocol has played a balancing role, and extended thesurvival time of the entire network.
