The "Advanced Video Coding" standard which is known as ITU-T Recommendation H.264and as ISO/IEC MPEG-4part10is the latest standard that based on video compression.H.264is designed primarily to support efficient and robust coding and transport of video frames. For increased coding efficiency, these include improved prediction design aspects such as variable block-size motion compensation with small block sizes, context-adaptive entropy coding and so on. A new quarter-sample accuracy of design is also enhanced for improved motion compensation. Multiple reference picture motion compensation is used for enhanced motion accuracy, whereas it makes motion compensation more complicated. Using multiple reference increases coding time but result in a decrease in coded bitrates. Therefore, it barely used in real-time application. We discuss a number of the key coding technical developments of H.264and a few important fast block-based motion prediction methods. An improved algorithm is presented after studying the EPZS algorithm from JM (official test model released by JVT). EPZS makes excellent performance in coding frames except takes time to deal with rapid movements. This improved algorithm aims to reduce the time of motion estimation and compensation in condition of no significant losses measured by PSNR.
