Digital video technology is widely used in telecommunications, computer, radio, television and other fields, such as media storage, video telephony and digital television, video conferencing, and a series of applications prompted the production of many video coding standards. In the current,ITU-T and ISO/IEC are mainly two organizations which formulate international video coding standards. The ITU-T give emphasis to video communications area,such as video conferencing;The standard of MPEG was produced by the organization of ISO/IEC,the standard of MPEG give emphasis to the area of video storage(DVD),Broadcast TV,Internet or Wireless internet streaming media et al. The new international video coding standard named H.264/AVC is formulated by the Joint Video group(JVT) which is consisted of ISO/IEC and ITU-T. Compared to former international video coding standards,H.264 introduces many advanced technologies,included 4×4 integer pixel,intra prediction in spatial area,1/4 sub-pixel motion estimation,multi-reference frame and variable block inter motion estimation et al. Advanced technology brings a higher compression ratio,at the same time,it significantly improves the complexity of algorithm.So,how to decrease operation complexity and increase coding speed is the crux to achieve real time coding.Motion estimation is one of the most important,fastest developed technology in the field of video compression coding,it is the main way to decrease complexity of algorithm,and increase algorithm coding efficiency.In this paper,we study the standard of H.264 video compression coding and the technology of Motion Estimation,Then we introduces the current status of Motion Estimation algorithm, the basic principles and the classic block-matching motion estimation algorithm,At last,we focus on introduce the EPZS algorithm and UMHexagonS algorithm. In paper,the main research are as follows.(1) This paper firstly review the traditional block-matching Motion Estimation,secondly give a detailed description of the classic block-matching Motion Estimation algorithm steps,at last,the paper analysis and summary advantages of these algorithms as well as disadvantages.(2) From the anle of Inter-prediction encoding mode,the paper according to the different modes in the standard test sequence encoding the proportion of cases,give a improved EPZS algorithm which based on a fast encoding mode selection,firstly,paper study and analysis the ratio of each encoding mode in the standard test sequence.and then exclude the those encoding mode with very small ratio At last,the paper reference to the SEA algorithm in order to improve the efficiency of EPZS algorithm.(3) Research on the characteristics of UMHexagonS algorithm,the paper analysis some disadvantages of the algorithm,and set up a proper threshold in order to detecting the all-zero coded macroblocks,on this basic,the paper respectively improved the Asymmetric cross-shaped template and 5×5 template.(4) the paper complete the improved EPZS and UMHexagonS Algorithm on Joint Model platform.The experimental results shows that the encoding efficiency of the improved algorithm is good enough compared with the previous algorithm,while maintaining almost the same quality of reconstructed pictures.
