With the rapid development of computer networks, there are more requirements ofnetwork management. As the foundation of the network management, the networktopology is more important than ever before. Nowadays the network topology isgrowing more and more complicated and more difficult to maintain with manpower.Therefore, a strong demand of network topology auto discovery comes up.In this thesis, the Address Forwarding Table based algorithm for the discovery oflink layer is studied in detail, after an analysis of existing topology auto discoveryalgorithms. In the study, the solution of multiple switches connected to one other switchby one port is proposed. The special handle of layer-3switch in network topology autodiscovery is also analyzed. The later part of this article is the design of network autodiscovery system. In this design, the detailed design for net device informationcollection, information procession and front stage display are described completely. Inthe description of the net device information collection part, the MIBs used in thissystem and the way to distinguish device types are listed. In the information processionpart, the arrangement of network layer data and the implementation of link layeralgorithm are put forward. In the front stage part, two layer style display of networktopology is presented. This style makes the view of network topology more concise andeasy to understand. After the design, the test and measurement of the system is showed.Now the system is already used in real network environment. Its accuracy andefficiency testify to that the design goal is achieved.
