With rapid development of network, the size of topology becomes larger and larger,and also the structure becomes more and more complex. So, network management ismore important in net environment than ever beforeļ¼Œand a good management systemshould know network topology at first. In this way, administrator can configurenetwork devices, monitor the performance of network and diagnose faults efficiently.Automatic discovery of network topology is a prerequisite for analysis andmonitoring. The discovery is to get connect information from network devices, basedon these data we can display the graphic topology of the whole network. Netexploring can be divided into two levels:(1) network layer discovery, including theconnection between routers and subnets.(2) link layer discovery, including theconnection between switches and hosts.In this thesis, we introduce software of network management and topologydiscovery techniques at first. And next, we do research of a variety of methods todiscovery network topology, the focus is SNMP-based discovery algorithm. Fromstudying MIB, we give an improved solution based on traditional approach. As asupplement, we use ICMP to explore the internal of subnet, so an accurate topology ofmain network can be discovered efficiently. Finally, based on the improved algorithm,we design and implement a network topology management system.
