With the advancement of urbanization process of China, the growth of urban traffic flow has become the great challenges of urban transportation planning. How to layout traffic zoom reasonably, how to get the law of citizens’travel, and how to monitor the state traffic congestion in real time are problems to be solved by the traffic administration. The monitoring of the traffic management department is mainly based on traffic cameras, vehicle induction coil and other traditional equipment. Road traffic speeds are obtained by manual observation. There is no real-time traffic-monitoring network, which covers all districts. That leads to low efficiency of operations and costs a lot.Currently, taxis of many cities are equipped with vehicle information collection device. This device can regularly send vehicle information, such as coordinates, direction, speed, passenger status to the taxi dispatch center. Based on HTML5, OpenLayers, SAP HANA in-memory database and other technologies, we developed a real-time traffic monitoring system in accordance with a great amount of real-time data collected by taxi dispatch center. It helped to monitor real-time traffic status and playback the historical traffic conditions. This traffic monitoring system provided a visual traffic monitor platform for traffic administration.The design of Traffic status monitoring system is divided into three parts:database backend, Service backend and client. On database backend, according to the functional requirements of the system, we designed map-matching algorithm and road status calculation method. Service backend uses a REST style Web services. And service background uses WebSocket technology to achieve the full-duplex communication between client and server. Client uses the open-source framework OpenLayers to show map. By HTML5technology, user can interact with web page on iOS device to control the big screen client.The main topic of this article is to discuss how to use taxi GPS data for urban traffic monitoring system. According to pilots in some cities, the system can basically reflect the real-time traffic conditions of the main roads in a city. It helps traffic management departments timely release traffic information. The system has practical value.
