Wireless sensor network is a new kind of network, which gets a widespread concern and iswidely used in agriculture, industry, environmental protection and other industries. The wirelesssensor network is composed of thousands of sensor nodes. Sensor nodes collect and processinformation, send the processed data to a convergence point. Sensor network technologies includeSensing Technology, Near Field Communication Technology and so on. The sensor network isdifferent from the ad hoc network. Many major challenges are confronted in the development of sensor networks, such aspositioning issue, security issue. The routing problem is also one of the key research questions.Various types of protocols emerge accompany the sensor network advances. Geographical andenergy aware routing (GEAR) base on the geographical information is a typical representative ofthe routing protocols. Sensor node is equipped with limited resources. Pursuit of efficient networkperformance necessarily requires the integrated knowledge of the geographical information andnetwork resource information. GEAR uses energy aware metrics and distance metrics to makeefficient routing decisions. The protocol reduces the overall energy consumption of the network. In this paper, a deep study is made on the GEAR protocol. A detailed description of protocolsteps, together with deficiencies is given. A new approach is proposed to solve the problem ofrouting hole. By the cooperation of the other nodes, sensor nodes share energy consumption, improve the transmission of a large mount of data. With the help of the interference aware metrics,an improvement is made on the protocol, which takes account of the interference information. Ns2network simulation results the improvement of GEAR protocol gain advantage against the originalGRAR protocol on network lifetime and packet loss rate.
