A wireless sensor network (WSN) is composed of a large number of wireless sensor nodes that are densely deployed either inside the phenomenon or very close to it. WSN can be used for various application areas such as military application, environment monitoring, health-care, smart home, structure health monitoring (SHM) and so on. Different from traditional wireless local area network (WLAN), nodes in WSN are energy-constrained and generally have no energy supply. Then, routing protocols of WSN should aim at using energy efficiently so that the network could have long lifetime. There are two challenges in prolonging the lifetime of wireless sensor network. The first one is energy utilization, it says that energy should be used efficiently and not be wasted for each data transmission. The second is balancing energy usage among nodes, it means that nodes should dissipate power equivalently to avoid the hotspot issue, in which situation some areas would be out of monitoring. In this paper, we propose a novel mechanism named Position&Energy Aware Routing (PEAR) which can be used in different wireless sensor networks. Based on the position information of global topology of nodes, it considers the trade-off between energy consumption and residual energy, and then generates a strategy globally. PEAR protocol utilizes a novel communication approach to control the data transmission by the form that nodes receive the orders from the base station (BS). This paper employs PEAR in the duty-cycled wireless sensor network with fixed BS to test its performance. The simulation results validate the dominance of our proposed protocol, namely PEAR. It outperforms the traditional routing protocol dramatically in terms of energy consumption and lifetime extending.
