When high-voltage transmission power system equipment in use, it will produce corona and surface partial discharge phenomenon due to the reduction of the insulating properties. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor high voltage electrical equipment timely. UV imaging detection technology is capable of long-range detection without sunlight interference as an ideal detection method. UV imaging detection technology usually output video signal to process, therefore, video image processing technology plays a very crucial role. Field-programmable gate array (FPGA) with advantages of high performance, flexibility, low development costs and rich IP resources and become the ideal choice for video processing.By combining Jiangsu scientific and technological support project " developed high voltage grid corona discharge UV detector camera " in Changzhou Institute of Optoelectronic Technology, this paper does research on target extraction algorithm and propose a simple and efficient way due to the pixel intensity gradient distribution characteristics from the center to the edge of the UV discharge detection image, and use edge detection, morphological operation and median filtering extracted discharge target area, then improved algorithm from serial execution to parallel execution based on FPGA parallel computing features:change the execution of operation from serial to parallel, use dichotomy and fast parallel method instead of the ordinary sort method in data sorting and compare the applicability of several algorithm in every step of the above operation in computing speed and resource consumption, then elaborate the reason of algorithm selection. Finally, design pipeline structure to implement the algorithm in FPGA. By simulating Verilog HDL code through the ModelSim and MATLAB, the experimental results show that this algorithm can eliminate noise and extracted discharge target area in video effectively.
