One of the trends for pulse power technology is developing from single pulse to the repetitive high average power. The maximum pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of conventional uniform field spark gaps is normally restricted to tens Hz by its little time for recovery process to establish when used under DC conditions. However, under suitably non-uniform field conditions, stabilized corona activity effectively creates a suitable period for the reapplied voltage to reach the previous voltage level before pre-breakdown and can therefore make the gap operate at high PRFs. Corona stabilized switches have been researched to improve the pulse power system such as Marx generator in this paper.The performances in static and trigger modes, the lifetime and PRFs of the rod-plane corona stabilized switches have been researched in this paper. The main key design factors have been summarized by designing a single-rod plane structure corona stabilized switch, the rod diameter, main gap and trigger gap distance of which is 2mm,10mm and 2.5mm respectively. Its breakdown time delay and jitter can be founded in experiments under 40 ns and 4ns, which means that this kind of switches can meets the requirements of jitter and stabilization in Pulse Power system.Based on the obtained designing summaries, a three-rod triggered and 3 six-rod self breakdown corona stabilized switches have been designed as the parts of a 4-stage Marx generator. The following conclusions:a) currents can be up to 2kA, b) output voltage, rise time of pulse and PRFs of the Marx generator can be up to130kV,110ns and 200Hz respectively when pulse energy is 22J and load R is 200Ω, have been made from comparative studies between Pspice circuit simulations and experiments. Conclusion also can be made that corona stabilized switches can improve PRFs of Marx generator even in high pulse energy operation. Observing the ablation of electrodes, it can be deduced that multi-rod structure corona stabilized switches can effectively extend lifetime of rod electrodes.
