With the development of the digitization progress on a global scale, digitizationtechnology has been infiltrating into all aspects of life continually. As an important part of thespiritual demands in people’s daily life, TV technology is also transformed from the analogtelevision to digital television. At present, cable television has become the mainstream andgeneral trend of development.And in China, Cable television will still play a leading role indigital TV terminal market. With the promotion of cable television market, terrestrial digitalchannels televisionl projects and satellite digital channels television projects also have beenlaunched.Set-top box is an embedded device, which is used to transform digital TV signals intoanalog signal. At present, digital set-top box has already become a kind of embeddedcomputing equipment with impeccable real-time operating system, which can providepowerful CPU computing skill, which also is used to coordinate the cooperation of varioushardware parts in set-top boxes. Set-top box also is used to provide interactive entertainmentby convenient and friendly user interface, such as enhanced electronic program guide (EPG).The design and implementation of set-top box in this paper is based on the developmentproject of interactive set-top box by CATV network, in terms of MPEG-2and DVB-Cinternational standards. The design scheme of set-top box system structure of hardware andsoftware is presented in this paper. The key of hardware part in set-top box is on basic of theHi3110E chip, the architeture of which is ARM9. The QAM demodulation and MPEG-2source decoding function are integrated into Hi3110E, which supports the superpositiondisplay with five layers of VO display plane. The software part, the embedded real-timeoperating system Linux is adopted, and delamination modularization is used for realizingconvenient operation experience.The set-top box in this paper also is integrated with the Internet IP technology, so theset-top box can access to Internet by PPPoE, DHCP and many other protocols, and maketelevision set from passive receiving analog television signal to interactive digital television,such as IPTV, video on demand and so on. Therefore cable TV users may obtain morecolourful entertainment through extensive multimedia information and value-added service. In addition, combining digital video broadcast technology with network technologies, thedevelopment of technology not only providing broad space for development of set-top box,but also providing more services for radio and television operators operators and users to meetthe needs at different levels, namely, it is very practical and expansibility.
