With the growth and development of smart residential area which is a product ofnetwork information technology and requirement of high quality of life, security of the areahas become a focus of attention in model life. This paper primary researches the applicationof network monitoring system on smart residential area based on embedded microprocessorunit and embedded Linux system, in order to provide a low-cost, flexible, efficient and safeliving environment.In order to meet the requirement, the monitoring system with modular design realizesgathering image from network camera, image processing and saving in local storage throughadopting ARM920T processor as its hardcore and Linux kernel V2.6as its software core,viewing real-time image and replaying history on an intelligent terminal by embedded Webserver. The system designed with three layer architecture of B/S mode collects image fromnetwork camera based on multithread technology, and takes advantage of the communicationprotocol set in camera and outer API interface. On image compression, the system achievesJPEG compression based on standard JPEG compression principle. It can provideasynchronous communication with the server by adopting the Ajax and CGI Web embeddedserver for solving the restriction problems of the resources and operation in embedded device.Meanwhile, the system has Web interface which is easy-to-use, with rich dynamics, and closeto local desktop applications for user by applying JavaScript and CSS technology.This article introduces the design of network monitoring system, which provides anavailable method to combine embedded technology, network communication technology andintelligent monitoring technology, for building a practical, flexible and efficient system withstrong expansion and low cost. The modular design of the overall system ensures a balanceamong closed, open and efficiency, as well as favors the reuse of system and system upgrade.It can meet customized requirement of user through selection of the module. This system,which is proved to be a stable and reliable and easy to operate system, has been favorablycommented by the user. Analysis shows that the system with the practical design has positivemeanings for applying network monitoring system extensively in residential areas.
