In recent years, the3rd Generation mobile communication (3G) technology hasbeen developed rapidly in and abroad. With the formal release of3G license in ourcountry, three3G systems have been put into operation successively. As the3G mobilecommunication standard independently researched and developed by our country,TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) has beenput into commercial use in many cities, which can provide integrated services tosubscribers and has been gradually accepted by citizens. Consequently,3G technologyhas also been led to many private communication networks with various means toenhance the service provision capability and guarantee subscriber’s quality of service.As the interface between the Wireless Access Network and Core Network in the3rd Generation (3G) mobile communications system, Iu interface defined to transmitthe data in both the control plane and the user plane, and interwork the Wireless AccessNetwork and Core Network.In this paper, the structure, properties and functions of Iu interface are studied.The stack based on IP which includes SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol),M3UA (Signaling System7Message Transfer Part3-User Adaptation Layer), SCCP(Signaling Connection Control Part), RANAP (Radio Access Network Application Part)and Iu UP (Iu Interface User Plane Protocols) is analyzed. To meet the practicalrequirements of the private communication system, a design scheme of the Iu interfacesoftware is proposed, which supports both the circuit domain and the packet domain.With several innovative technologies, the Iu software of the private communicationsystem is developed. With the Iu software, the private communication system cansupport the TD-SCDMA radio system’s accession. Finally, the test and validation of theIu interface software are presented in this paper.
