How to save resources especially the energy is of great importance in the design of both hardware and software in wireless sensor networks. Routing protocol is a core technology of wireless sensor network, whose performance directly affects the efficiency of the entire network. In2000, R.Ahlswede et al. proposed the network coding, an information exchange technology that integrated coding and routing, open the new ideas for the design of routing protocol. Network coding can increase the transmission rate and robustness of the network as well as save energy. Our work is to design an energy efficient and reliable routing protocol integrated with network coding.This paper firstly analyzes some typical routing protocols of WSNS and routing protocols of wireless network integrated with network coding. Secondly, there are many problems when we integrate the network coding into the routing protocols of WSNS. We put forward our own ideas and solutions to solve these problems. All of these solutions are aim to reduce energy conservation. Thirdly, we propose and implement an energy efficient and reliable routing protocol base on network coding, EENC protocol. In EENC protocol, we design a variety of mechanisms to save energy and increase the reliability, such as pipeline establishment, Credit algorithms, reliable retransmission mechanism, ect. Finally, we simulate the protocol on Tossim. The simulation shows that EENC protocol gets good performance on the received packet rate, energy consumption, delay, energy balance compared with other protocols.
