Along with the development of Intelligent Transportation System, the scheduling and management mode of public transit has been changed step by step. By integrating several technologies such as wireless data transmission, satellite positioning and RFID, the quality of public transit service has also been improved. The goal of this paper is to design and realize an automatic vehicle identification system which is based on ZigBee technology and can provide information support for scheduling and supervision of public transport vehicles.The paper presents the design of system composition and structure and describes the function and workflow of each module within the system. In order to simplify the system structure, the system is divided into four layers including field device layer, network access layer, data aggregation layer and data processing platform.Some related basic knowledge about ZigBee as well as its protocol framework and functions is also introduced. The paper gives solutions for ZigBee wireless TAG design and for system integration of ZigBee base station. With respect to data center of the vehicle identification system, some chapters are assigned to focus on hardware and software composition, high-availability cluster solution and programming of communication service, respectively. In addition, this paper demonstrates data processing module and GIS software module.
