PCI Express is a cutting-edge bus protocol with extremely highthroughput. It is widely applied to devices such as graphic processing unitand ehternet card, where high bandwidth is a must. With the present of thePCI Express2.0/3.0, the bandwidth of PCI Express is improved further. So,more and more servers use PCI Express as internal bus interfaces to meetthe high bandwidth requirement. Typical devices equipped in servers usePCI Express interface, including10Gigabit ethernet card and solid statestorage. In this thesis, we mainly focus on the both analysis and design ofthe PCI Express controller base on SOPC system for the future cloudcomputing. From our perspective, following aspects makes our researchwith a promising future. First, nowadays, both cloud computing and cloudcomputing servers meet their bottle neck on energy. New architecture ofthese servers is necessary to solve this problem. Second, with theimprovement of manufacturing technology, to some extent FPGA cansolve its traditional bottle neck such as energy, cost and scale of the chip.Besides, SOPC system, which is base on FPGA, has the advantage of shortdevelop period, high feasibility etc. It would be a good idea to try to buildthe cloud server on SOPC system. Third, PCI Express is a must in thecloud server but today we still lack the support of PCI Express on SOPCsystem. Our research will serve as the solid base for the PCI Express in thefuture cloud server on SOPC. In this thesis, we introduce several PCIExpress architectures we design and implement on the FPGA/SOPCsystem. In one of the architecture, we implement the PCI Express endpointwith DMA function on the FPGA/SOPC. In another system, we even implement a root controller on the FPGA/SOPC, which is, to our bestknowledge, the first root controller implemented in the domesticacademies.
