IPv6is the next generation of network layer protocol, which provides almostunlimited vast addresses, faster routing method, simpler header structure and many othersuperior properties. It will take the place of IPv4in near future.With the continuous expansion of internet business, all kinds of data networks areconstantly expanding. Increase the network bandwidth is a good idea to solve this problem.However, on the one hand it takes high cost, on the other hand the potential has limited.As another solution, the QoS (Quality of Service) has suggested to control the flow on theinternet. QoS must be to classify the packets to identify which applications data packetsare generated by. Without flow classification, the network can not determine the particularpacket processing to be carried out.IPv6provides a new field in it’s header: flow label. Flow label is now set to zero, andhas not put in practical use at all. Application of flow label is still an open research topic,with rational planning and usage it would provide more convenient to classify the packetsfor QoS to provide differentiated service.This paper focuses on the applications and implication of IPv6flow label in thenetwork, discusses the usage and the mechanism of IPv6flow label during the flowtransmission, the flow classification based on differentiated services model and the fastforwarding based on the flow label.
