Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a new class of network systems that differentfrom the traditional networks. WSN is a data-centric network, data transmission isone of its fundamental problems and it is also the key to the realization of other ap-plications. WSN has some unique features such as resource constraint and the energyof node can not be replaced and so on, therefore, for different WSN application sce-narios, it is especially important to design energy-efficient reliable data transmissionstrategy to meet the specific needs.This paper first analyzes the existing reliable data transmission strategies ofWSN by classification, then a novel reliable data transmission strategy using codingand regional cooperative forwarding is proposed. The distinguishing feature of thenew strategy is mainly reflected in the following two aspects.(1) Energy-efficientand reliable data coding method. Before sending packets out, the source node firstencodes the original data into coded data packets for the purpose of improving net-work packet loss resistance capacity. The new encoding method proposed in this pa-per can guarantee all encoded data packets are linearly independent, so it improvesthe sink’s decoding success rate. Moreover, this new coding method can avoid thetransfer of encoding vectors, which reduces node energy consumption during datatransmission.(2) In order to improve the performance of data transmission, this paperthen proposes a “Region Pushing” based data collaboration forwarding strategy. Inthis strategy, there is no need to build fixed data transmission routes, the data for-warding process is composed of two sub-processes, i.e. determination of the receivernodes and realization of collaborative data forwarding. When a packet received, thenode judges whether it is a receiver node according to its area number at first, andthen the best forwarding node, which is responsible for the next hop data transmission,is selected from all receiver nodes by collaborative communication. Because thisstrategy can get more than one receiver node, it avoids data transmission interruptionwhich is caused by the failure of a single node in the fixed-path data transmissionmode, therefore it improves data forwarding success rate. Moreover, by selecting anode which has relative maximum residual energy from receiver nodes as forwardingnode, this strategy can ensure the forwarding node has enough energy to support dataforwarding. Besides, as the forwarding nodes are selected dynamically, this strategycan balance node energy consumption and extend the lifetime of network.Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that with lower data re-dundancy, the new strategy can obtain a higher data transmission success rate as wellas extends the network lifetime.
