Optical correlator can detect, fast recognize and track the target. In this paper, the basic principal of the hybrid photoelectric joint transform correlator and the characteristics of the components are analyzed. According to the analysis, the image enhancement technology is applied in the hybrid photoelectric joint transform correlator purposefully.Edge is the significant feature information of the target. Reference the relative merits of the existing edge extraction methods, a new method of edge extraction based on wavelet multi-scale synthesis is proposed. It can effectively suppress the noise in the image, and the edge width is adjustable, so it is very suitable for input image preprocessing of the optical correlator.The joint transform power spectrum is the middle link of the joint transform correlation recognition. In this paper the methods, such as power spectrum subtraction, fringe adjusted filter, Laplace operator and binary processing, are synthesized and advanced to enhance the fringe and eliminate the background interference.At last, the experiment result shows that, for the low contrast, cluttered scene, infrared image, the image enhancement technology can effectively increase the cross correlation points brightness in the output image, improve the detection and recognition performance of the optical correlator.
