In this paper, real-time joint transform correlator is used for optical correlation detection. Because of the background noise effect on the identifying target, real-time joint transform correlator can't recognize low-contrast image. It behaves that the brightness of correlating spot is low, even no correlating spot. This is need to be preprocess about the object plane.Spline wavelet is adopted in this paper, this paper extracts the edge characteristic information of reference template and the target effectively based on the characters of multi-scale wavelet. After processed, the correlation peak of the joint transform correlator is more incisive. The result of computer simulate experiment and optical experiment also prove that the method of edge extraction mentioned in this paper has remarkable outputs when it was applied to different kinds of images such as target in low contrast and infrared target. In a word, ideal experimental results are obtained.
