LD CW side-pumping two-rod resonator is a technique to attain output laser with high power (energy) and high beam quality. It is applied to material processing (welding, cutting) and nonlinear optics (SHG, OPO). The thermal induced birefringence affect on the output power and beam quality of two-rod resonator. So the research on the birefringence compensation is very important.The thesis generalized the theory of passive cavity. Combining with matrix optics principles, the parameters of the equivalent resonator was delivered. The movement of g1*, g2*was charted with refractive power D. According to the definition of the complex beam parameter of the Gaussian beam and the resonator self-production conditions, the two-rod cavity’s waist size and location was obtained. The TEM00beam size on the principal face of rod was calculated by the propagation of the Gaussian beam.According to the theoretical calculation, the laser had been built. The output power and beam quality of two-rod resonator laser was measured. Based on the transformation of the quarter-wave plate, a new novel of birefringence compensation was described. The experiment showed that this technique could compensate the thermal induced birefringence.
