In recent years, with the development of multimedia technology and embeddedchips, the applications of multimedia based on embedded system have been widelyused in many fields. As for the dependence of information obtained through internetbecomes more and more important, the multimedia applications which are relevant tothe internet based on the embedded system are going to attract more attention thanbefore. The former way of transmitting multimedia files through internet is to downloadthem to localhost PC, which requires the multimedia files to be completely loadedbefore being played. By this method, it has to suffer time wasting and delay. As soonas the technology of stream-media pops up, watching media files when it’s beingdownloading comes true. In this way, the spread of multimedia files becomes mucheasier, due to the small time delay. In the decade of embedded products, thestream-media goods is no doubted to be well popularized by market. In this paper, it’s described the multimedia playing system based on theGstreamer frame, which is equipped with many functions and is developed for LinuxOS multimedia processing. At the beginning, it’s introduced the relevant knowledge, and then it’s described the research and development of playing system based on aproject of HDTV. This playing system applies the Linux OS to be the bottomplatform and the Gstreamer to drive the decoders, and then packets the function APIfor above level applications. The Gstreamer plug-in, playbin2, is applied to the system, and the decoder supports many media types, both of which save the time of development. Finally, the playing system we developed is tested to be good enoughfor supporting stream-media.
