Millimeter wave radiometer obtains the target information using the millimeter wave radiation energy differences between the target and background. Because of its passive perception, strong penetration and working around the clock, etc., it is widely used in battlefield reconnaissance, scene monitoring, aircraft ILS and other fields. Detecting the military objectives and hidden dangerous goods is the basic function of the radiometer, and the results directly affect the probability of target detection, target positioning and tracking performance, so it plays a decisive role. Thus the target detection technology becomes a hot research point of millimeter-wave radiometer field. This paper focused on the metal targets detection from the millimeter wave signal and image, and studied the modulus maxima and the meanshift methods. The mail content is as follows:1. Be aimed at target feature distortion when denoising the low SNR millimeter-wave signal, it selected quadratic B-spline wavelet and extract the modulus maxima. The method can directly obtain the edge of the target.2. Be aimed at the problem that the modulus maximas at the low scale are completely controled by noise for low SNR signal, using the modulus maxima growth and distribution law with scale, it calculates directly the position of low scale modulus maxima. The method has a very low false alarm rate and missed alarm rates, and high accuracy of the target parameter extraction.3. Be aimed at the problem of too much interference and affected largely by the threshold using global threshold method, it selected meanshift to estimate the millimeter-wave image background, and it can greatly reduce interference quantity.4. Be aimed at the existence of residual background for removed backgournd millimeter wave images, it chooses meanshift to estimate the target mean gray value. The threshold obtained by this method can effectively remove the residual background and retent the target characteristics. Finally, the simulation and measurion verify the feasibility of the above methods. The results show that the modulus maxima and the mean shift method can accurately detect metal targets from the millimeter wave radiometer signal and image.
