In the field of virtual reality, Augmented Reality(AR) is an advanced research branch. ARcombines virtual objects with realistic scenes by using3D graphics and visual trackingtechnology, making3D virtual graphics and realistic surroundings visually perfectly blend toenhance the effect of the real environment. People can interact with virtual objects throughAR technology. The electronic guide which combines with the augmented reality technology, will introduce new attractions in tour guide and meanwhile bring new digital mediatechnologies and applications. This paper studies the electronic tour guide system (ETGS) based on AR technology onthe smart phone equipped with cameras. The technology can superimpose2D or3Danimation or video in real time to the scene captured by the smart phone camera. Android andiPhone are current mainstream mobile phone platform. This paper will explore how toimplement this technology on the Android platform. The thesis mainly addresses thefollowing aspects:(1) Design and Develop AR scenes. A scene involves the attraction imagesprocessing, object tracking, virtual-real registration, interactivity. The system implements ARscene on D’Fusion. This paper describes the procedure of the implementation of AR moduleon D’Fusion.(2) Design and implement an electronic tour guide system on Android. Thesystem achieved the function modules including attractions package management, augmentedreality rendering, map location, visitors information management, the test on attractionsknowledge. The module of Attractions package management locates visitors’ positions usingGPS, and downloads the corresponding package according to the position. It then unpacks thescene package and tests its integrity. The AR rendering module calls the scene files byD’FusionMobile. It tracks the attractions, displays AR effect and controls the interactivitybetween Android and virtual objects. The map positioning module makes use of Google Mapsand GPS, marks points of interest position, and calculates the best travel routes, and displaysvisitors’ locations. The tourist information management module records the basic informationof tourists. The attractions knowledge test module analyses the test files by using the XMLDOM technology and manages the result.
