Shadow puppetry, also known as shadow play, is one of China’s historic folk arts. It is facing the statues of disappearing gradually according to the recent surveys which raised an interest in digital shadow in order to improve its situation. The researchers combine the traditional Shadow puppets with digital technology, spread and promote it by network and multimedia, which bring a new life to the traditional shadow play.However, the research of digital shadow is still stay in the underlying levels because of involving too many technical and theoretical fields. Current studies focus on the shadow characters modeling, digital shadow’s storage and system simulation, and the multimedia platforms are always supplied for professional only. There is not an interactive platform allows users, especially for non-professionals to participate in "the interaction of making and performance the shadow puppet". We designed an interactive platform for digital shadow making and performing which can basically meet the users’needs of making and performing shadow play online, and solve the problems of current digital shadow studies, such as poor user experience and lacking of interaction.Firstly, we study the interactive narrative mode and propose an interactive narrative mode based on the metaphor of drama which is used in our digital shadow platform, is different from traditional linear narrative. Then, we propose an interactive narrative framework of attraction, participation, interaction, extension, which allows users to participate in selecting characters and brewing the story plot. All these provide theoretical support for the digital shadow platform. Secondly, in order to achieve the goal of interactive making and performing, we also make a research on modeling and controlling the digital shadow, and propose some new methods. Thirdly, we developed an IDSMP system, with an emphasis description of requirement analysis, design and implementation of the system. Finally, we conducted a usability testing on the network platform to verify the effectiveness and usability of the system.
