With the leap-forward development of the railway industry of China, a large number of high-speed EMU is running. In high-speed running state, any small and subtle failure may cause major accidents, thus improving the detection and abnormal warning of the state of EMU’s component while running in the long routing and station-fold is essential to the railway system. How to enhance the quality of EMU inspection and repairment, and how to strengthen the monitoring of EMU maintenance operations quality is the key point.This paper analyzed the short-comings of the existing methods of EMU fault detection while running, and proposed the technical solution which uses the machine vision (change detection) technology to analyze the visual structure abnormal of running EMU in real-time and to generate the automatic warning. The first EMU running fault dynamic image detection system is designed and implemented. The system adopted the modular design approach, and integrated key technologies, such as high-speed control technology, high-speed image capture technology, the EMU vehicle identification technology, low-channel image processing and transmission technology, and EMU abnormal automatic warning technology. The system achieved the target of visual status monitoring and intelligent detection alarm of key parts of high-speed running EMU, such as bogie, backplane, car terminal connection portion. The system has been installed in some railway bureau in China and achieved the desired design goals.
