Movable-type printing, as one of the four great inventions in ancient China, has played a tremendous role in promoting political, economic and cultural development. Fujian, one of the major centers of book printing in ancient China, has started to use the movable type printing widely since Ming Dynasty while following the woodblock printing, and has been of great consequence in the history of China’s movable printing.The thesis analyzes the traditional moveable-type printing of Fujian by datum analysis, and also using theories of typology, history, culturology, etc. The thesis includes three contents below. Firstly, it briefly introduces the invention and development of the movable-type printing, and also introduces the type of movable-type printing as well as its features. Secondly, the thesis explores the Fujian movable-type printing activities during Ming and Qing Dynasties, taking the time as the clue. All the movable-type printing books which the author has seen or known are collected to describe their version features. Also, the thesis shows an account of the significant movable-type printing activities and the achievements of related bibliophiles and engraving calligraphers, trying to reproduce the movable-type printing activities in Ming and Qing Dynasties in Fujian. Then the author collates and analyzes the collected material, explores some basic questions about the Fujian moveable-type printing and analyzes its status and influence in Ming and Qing Dynasties. And the thesis also reveals the the law of the movable-type printing and the role it has played in the formation of social history and culture. Finally, in the perspective of cultural heritage, the author points out the necessity for the protection of the survival of the traditional movable-type printing. The thesis is a comprehensive and systematic research for Fujian ancient traditional movable type printing and also points out the direction of future research to provide a reference for other researchers.
