The theory of private collection is the theoretical achievement of ancient Chinese bibliophiles,which integrates their own thinking on the basis of rich experience in book seeking,textual criticism,collection management,and book restoration.It is also a window to explore the development of ancient Chinese library science as well as classical bibliography.In China's long history of ancient private collection,the period from Ming Dynasty to middle of Qing Dynasty is undoubtedly a “highlight moment”.Great progress had been made in private collection.Various theories put forward by bibliophiles had enriched and developed the theoretical system of ancient Chinese library science,promoting the development of ancient Chinese library science.They are the precious spiritual heritage left by ancient sages for us.At present,it is of great theoretical and practical significance to study the private collection theories in Ming and Qing Dynasties.This study focuses on the role and contribution of private collection theories in the development of ancient Chinese library science in the Ming and Qing Dynasties,and studies the theories put forward by six bibliophiles.Literature method and logic method are adopted in the research.By using standards made by authority,this study selects six representative bibliophiles from thousands of bibliophiles in Ming and Qing Dynasties: Huang Yuji,Hu Yinglin,Qi Chenghan,Sun Congtian,Zhou Yongnian,and Zhang Xuecheng.By studying their theoretical works,this study explores the development of library science brought by different aspects of their theories and the significance of the times for the development of library cause and library science.This study uses historical research methods and comparative research methods.First of all,this paper expounds the development of private collection from Ming Dynasty to the middle of Qing Dynasty,including the background of private collection activities in Ming and Qing Dynasties,and the development of private collection activities and private collection theories in Ming to the middle of Qing Dynasty.Then it introduces the contribution of bibliophiles to the corresponding contents of library science.Finally,this paper discusses the critical inheritance from the academic content and the spirit of the times,focusing on the analysis of the shortcomings of Zhang Xuecheng's academic thought and the value of the cultural purport and humanistic spirit contained in the ancient book collection theory.This study finally comes out a conclusion that before The First Opium War,ancient Chinese bibliophiles have already developed a set of theoretical system of library science covering the whole business process of library.
