High throughput is required in more and more Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) applications, such as image, voice, video and other high data volume services. Therefore, resolving the key issues in high-throughput sensor network is conducive to the development of sensor network technology. Routing protocol is the core part of a network system, so designing routing protocols base on the characteristics of high-speed sensor networks is particularly important. The optimized link state routing (OLSR) protocol is widely used in wireless ad hoc networks. However, in OLSR, only one routing path from the source node to the destination node is provided; wireless links are very unreliable and the topology of a wireless network might vary rapidly, which may frequently cause retransmissions or path rebuilding. Therefore, it became a bottleneck of the network throughput, especially in large and dense ad hoc or sensor networks. This dissertation firstly analyzes the characteristics of WSNs, and identifies the reason of the throughput bottleneck. Then opportunistic routing and network coding are adopted to resolve the the bottleneck. Opportunistic routing and network coding is very suited for the instability characteristic of WSN topology and the throughput bottleneck can be effectively removed. The research of opportunistic routing and network coding is mainly about theoretical simulation. The situations encountered in practical application are not taken into account. In this dissertation, these problems are considered and optimized during the realization of opportunistic routing and network coding.Opportunistic routing and network coding also need link quality information to form an entire executable protocol. In this dissertation, OLSR is modified to provide the required information. The modified OLSR can support simultaneous detection of multiple routes. In order to be more suitable for WSN applicatoin, the unnecessary parts of OLSR which are not useful in WSNs are cut off in this dissertation. Finally, this dissertation proposes a routing protocol based on OLSR, opportunistic routing and network coding mechanism. With Click router software, the performance both in simulation and practical experiment is evaluated. The throughput of the designed routing protocol can be more than10times and2times of that of the standard OLSR protocol respectively in simulation and implementation.
