Wireless sensor network (WSN for short) is one of the promising research subjects in the field of information in the21st century, which contains embedded computing technology, wireless communication technology and sensor technology and so on. It has a very broad application prospect in domains of industrial, agriculture, military, medical and environmental monitoring.WSN can achieve the perception of the target monitoring area, and send the perceived information to the user by using wireless communications. WSN has a lot of advantages, such as low-cost, low power consumption and laying convenience, etc, that make it well suited for monitoring crop environmental information. This topic, taking the crops growth environment information monitoring for background, is dedicated to researching and developing WSN communications systems and water-saving irrigation expert systems to promote the development of precision agriculture.Irrigation expert system, as one of the key elements of precision agriculture, is an intelligent application systems, which is established by using the artificial intelligence technology and integrating the irrigation principle and computer technology.The focus of this dissertation has two aspects, the WSN communication systems and irrigation expert system design. The main works which have completed in this thesis are as follows:(1) According to the monitoring of environmental information crop requirements, this thesis designs and implements a wireless sensor network communication system for farmland monitoring. The thesis respectively designs and implementes a short-range communication module based on Zigbee protocol and long-range communication module based on GSM network for Sink node and terminal node. These two parts mainly describe their own design thought,main functions, realization process. The thesis also displays the results of data acquisition.(2) On the basis of this topic application project to rely on, this thesis designs an irrigation expert system which integrates the display and irrigation management. First the thesis analyzes the system requirements, then describes the overall system architecture and each functional module. Also the thesis introduces the implementation process of the irrigation management, that is, how to judge the current water shortage of the crop based on the collected soil moisture and canopy temperature, and make irrigation guidance.
