Character animation is one kind of computer three-dimentional animation whichdescribes the motion of one or more characters.Techology of character animation iscontinually improving with the promotion of computer softwares and hardwares and thedevelopment of computer graphics and image processing technology.Till now,characteranimation has been applied in many aspects such as game,movie and advertisement andit’s becoming more and more important.Although a character can make many kinds of poses through animation data,animation data exists without the consideration of physics,a character moves onlyaccording to the pre-designed animation data.Character animation based on physicssimulates the real physical world and takes into consideration the physical properties ofa character such as inertia,mass,collision and friction,by applying Newtonian dynamicsequation it calculates the position and orientation of a character to decide the currentstate of a character.Based on the current character animation system,this thesis implementes characteranimation based on physics,it mainly implentmentes the three following functions:Firstly,through ODE engine and the topological structure of a character this thesiscreates a rigid articulated object of a character.The articulated object of a character caninteractive with the real physical world.Finally through changing the information of anarticulated object into animation data,it implements character animation based onphysical simulation.Secondly,this thesis adds physical modifiers to a character.When a character movesaccording to the pre-designed animation data,physical modifiers ajust the behavior ofthe character through continually checking the current state of the character and thesurrounding physical environment.In this way,although the system is not makingphysical simulation of the character,the character also has some physical properties.Finally,this thesis implements dynamic blending of character animation through theresearching of traditional animation blending.Through dynamic blending a character canplay another piece of animation data real-time and partially.It means some parts of the character move according to the principle animation data,other parts of the charactermove according to the subordinate animation data.Dynamic blending not only avoidsthe the connection problem when making state transitions but also makes characteranimation more coincided with the law of physics and more realistic.
