Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) is a new kind of optical access network, which employs point to multipoint connection structure, is transferred by passive fiber optic and provides many broadband services on Ethernet. EPON technology can achieve better control of broadband and flexible networking. In addition, the network applying EPON technology has seen more expansions and upgrades. Meanwhile, EPON technology has many advantages, such as easy maintenance, simple fault location, and low operating cost. It accommodates to the strategies of "the replacement of copper cables with optical cables" so that it can effectively support the service specification for tri-network integrration and therefore it will become a main access technology of broadband in the future.Based on the basic principles and characteristics of EPON technology, combining with the construction projects and test work of Inner Mongolia Branch of China Unicom, the thesis introduced the basic concepts of tri-network integrration and made a brief analysis on the requirements of tri-network integrration. The thesis greatly explored the key technology in tri-network integrration-the EPON technology, including the basic principle and characteristics of EPON, system configuration model, system contracts model, transmission principle, the key technology of EPON and the constructing specifications of EPON based on FFTx. Last but not least, given the test plans of Inner Mongolia Branch of China Unicom, an exploration research about the practical application of EPON broadband technology was made.
