Zhou Shoujuan is a well-known people during the history of the modern literature and publishing. Asan expert in Love Birds and Butterfly genre, he had made a great contribution to the development of themodern literature and publishing, which mainly reflected in the activities associated the translations, editing and writing during20s to40s in20century. He managed to compile many Popular LiteraryJournals, including Saturday、half-moon、Purple Orchid Sheet、Violet、Good Friend、Optimistic. These publishing activities were dominated by his editing ideas and thoughts of promotingperiodicals. The earlier literature publications tried to achieve the thinking and idea of the aestheticfeeling in editorial work. After encountering with the impacts of new literature writers, he undertook thesocial responsibility from a certain extent, while highlighted the entertainment function in his journals, what made a profound and lasting influence on the early MinGuo society. With the investigation of more than ten magazines edited by the chief editor Zhou Shoujuan and inaccordance with editorial characteristics, this paper is to divide Zhou’s editorial career into four stages. Inthe first stage when Zhou practiced editing his early popular journals, it is aimed at study Zhou’s editingjourney from Saturday to Violet. In the second stage (1926.6-1926.12) which was also called Good FriendPeriod, it highlights Zhou’s dilemma when China came into a turning period. In the third part, it is on thestudy of Journal Purple Orchid Sheet. Zhou’s new experiment in editing pattern was embodied in thisjournal. He initiated a new publishing pattern—individual publishing. The fourth part is to focus on Zhou’slate editorial career, mainly based on his editing works Optimistic and Violet (or Past-Violet) in the timewhen China was occupied by Japanese. By the analysis of Zhou’s editing ways and literature idea on theabove magazines, expression forms, features of writing group, even those magazines’ influence on theliterary world in that society, this paper will explore Zhou’s distinguishing characteristics of publication andediting idea.Although Zhou Shoujuan had finely adjusted his editing concept, the establishment of Saturday,Half-moon, Violet, which actually belonged to popular literature, was hindered by new literature (promotedby the May4th Movement in1919) journals. When Zhou Shoujuan edited the journal Good Friend fromJune to December in1926, he continuously adopted the old publishing pattern of popular journals. Eventhough Good Friend was an influential new pictorial at that time, readers seemed to give little heed to those Zhou’s editing works with more focus on love, which seriously attacked Zhou’s old publishing thought.Besides, Optimistic, with the only pursuit of optimism but no talking of politics, and Violet (or Past-Violet),with young women as its writing body, giving considerations to meaning and funning, could berepresentatives of the popular literature journals. These Popular Literary Journals, which chief edited by shoujuan zhou, suggested the broadbackground of the literature and publishing industry during the20s to40s in20century, enriched themultiple characters of the history of literary and publication. All these indicated that he occupied animportant place in the history development. From the historical point, his editorial ideas and journal modelshave a certain significance on editing, operation and development of the current culture and life journals.
