During the leather production process, leather thickness is an importantelement for leather performance testing. With the transition of leathermanufacturing from workshop type to industrialized manufacture, in order toguarantee the quality of products by controlling production process effectively,higher demands have been made in measuring leather thickness accurately andquickly.As is known to all, the leather is soft materials, which must satisfy theprovisions of the measurement standards and related conditions made by thenational light insuatrial department. Constant pressure and after5s of themoment that instrument connects with the upper surface of leather slowly, thethickness value can be got. On the basis of the above two conditions, themeasuring accuracy and reliability of the thickness data was improved. The studyof measuring processes and principles in the existing similar apparatus was madecarefully, including the performance deficiencies of the instruments.For leather thickness instrument, on the basis that the accurate displacementwas gathered, the thickness measured can be shown on liquid crystal display,which was built with micro-processing chip. As a result, the study of thecapacitive was done, such as: characteristics and working principles. The studyof measuring processes and principles in the existing similar apparatus was madecarefully, including the performance deficiencies of the instruments. On the basisof the previous MH-YD1digital leather thickness instrument, the improveddigital gauge for measuring leather thickness was successfully developed.The whole system was analyzed from two aspects: hardware circuit designand software design. Hardware system consisted of price, selection for thedisplacement sensor, data selection, data processing and display, and theimprovement methods for the instrument reliability. Then the suitable chips were selected and the overall design of hardware system was completed. For softwaresystem, the beginning moment gaining of5s automatic timing was realized bythe micro-controller; the corresponding algorithms were used to improveaccuracy.The hardware and software design were both debugged in the end. What’smore, the design of mechanical parts was improved. Comparing with the currentexisting instruments, the current instrument was greatly improved inperformances. What’s more, automatic timing and constant pressuremeasurement was achieved in the improved instrument. And the measuringaccuracy and resolution was improved, with lower power and more humane. Theformer advantages created conditions for the standardized test of leather basicparameters in professional research of the leather field and industrializedproduction.
