In the recent years, the research of wireless sensor network (WSN) technology has becomevery popular in the field of information acquisition. It involves the sensors, the computers, thesignal processing, the microelectronics, the wireless networks communication and many othertechnology fields, with obviously interdisciplinary features. The wireless sensor networks havemany characteristics, such as a large number of nodes, strong adaptability, and poor workingcondition and so on, which makes the wireless sensor networks have an extensive practicalprospect, and limited energy. And this makes wireless sensor network development slow. Nowhow to effectively use the limited energy resources is a core issue for WSN. In this dissertation, the SRHR(Sleep mechanism of ring hierarchical routing protocol)is proposed by drawing on theLEACH(Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) and the RHR(Ring hierarchical routingprotocols). The main research work as follows:First of all,the designed ideas of the SRHR is proposed by analyzing the advantages anddisadvantages of the LEACH and the RHR. Specifically discussing the LEACH has itssuperiority; however the energy consumption of some sensor nodes is too large by the means ofsingle-hop transmission and random cluster head election in protocol. The RHR protocol usesring network architecture and Multi-hop transmission to solve this problem. But during themonitoring, the cluster head nodes need to consume a large amount of energy. So the sleepmechanism is adopted.Secondly, the dissertation gives a detailed description of the working process of the SRHRprotocol, such as signal communications, establishment of ring network architecture, the routingtable updates, election of the cluster head nodes and the sleep nodes, common nodes join thecluster head, sleep strategy and cycle of rebuilding. At the same time, some solutions are given inmany practical problems in the SRHR protocol. Finally, the LEACH, the RHR and the SRHR are simulated by using some platforms in thelaboratory. The number of elected cluster head nodes and the number of dead nodes in unit timeare compared in the three protocols. The results show that the SRHR is better than the LEACHand the RHR in energy efficiency and extend the network lifetime.
