The emergence of Intelligent Optical Network (ION) shows out the obvious direction for the development of the next generation optical transportation network. Its outstanding transmission performance and network management mechanisms not only satisfied the needs of existing services, but also provide excellent support for the new-coming data traffics with bursty and statistical multiplexing characteristics. Rapid and effective routing, signaling and survivable approaches have been deployed in the Intelligent Optical Network foreseeingly. The management and control mechanisms become smarter. Connections in the intelligent optical network can be managed dynamically, network resources can be scheduled flexibly and conveniently. Serials differentiated broadband services provided for kinds of users. Survivable algorithms and interface technologies for optical network are the two main subjects in this paper. For the network survivable algorithms, a new resource-based circle protection method for WDM network has been proposed. This method combines the advantages of RP circle approach and tunnel protected circle approach, resolved the problem of sharing protection resources and reduced the optical switching delay. Physical failures can be tackled in a short time with this effective algorithm. After that, another resource optimization based dynamic mapping algorithm for survivable IP over WDM network can be applied to deal with the IP failure propagation caused by the physical link down. This mapping method avoided "isolated island" problem which attribute to the existence of "critical link", the affected IP traffics can be restored in IP layer, a satisfying traffic blocking probability gained by employing this approach when mapping IP traffics onto physical topology. In the area of network interface technology studies, a generally introduction of OIF UNI and GMPLS UNI have been proposed firstly. We compared the similarities and differences between the two in many aspects, a reasonable design and realization for GMPLS UNI according to RFC 4208 has been carried out. More attention should be paid on the research of GMPLS UNI. Another optical network interface technology focused on the external network-network interface, signaling procedure and services supported is the main research contents.
