With the social and technical development, people are changing their way of communication and mobile phone more and more becomes one of the most important things in our daily life. The enriching functionality of mobile phone and people’s reliance on it make the reliability of mobile phone topics of most concern. In order to improve mobile phone’s reliability, Sony Ericsson Company invested a lot. From product design, development to production, we are trying to make our products get more and more reliable. Software testing, as an important session, is the key of evaluation and improvement method of reliability. The main researching area of this paper is the construction, governance and KPI analysis of Sony Ericsson reliability testing laboratory.As a typical software and hardware combined embedded system, the inner running software defines all the functionality and most of the reliability. Mobile phone software, as a software system just like all other software system, has kinds of attributes. As per ISO9126, reliability is one of the quality characteristics aligning with functionality, usability, efficiency and some others. Mobile phone software reliability testing is basing on the software reliability testing and aligned with mobile phone product specifics. In this paper we’ll describe how Sony Ericsson plan and deploy software reliability testing and the main focus is testing laboratory related.I will introduce the target of laboratory set-up, the plan of daily management, the plan of KPI management, how the laboratory is managed and KPI analysis. The core of the paper is the mission of reliability testing laboratory:to improve and stabilize the testing quality continuously. The build-up of testing laboratory includes hardware construction, competence team ramp up, management target or KPI target. Accordingly in the real laboratory operation we also care about these points. We will also analyze the KPI result basing on the problems we collect during the real operation. We aim to provide some data analysis support and some optimization management method for the long term healthy operation of the testing laboratory.Meanwhile Sony Ericsson reliability testing laboratory is also a typical software outsourcing project. It is provided by professional outsourcing vendor as a whole solution. Software outsourcing service can be very professional and flexible and there is no big one time investment. It is a very common and advantaged cooperation model. Due to the outsourcing vendor involved, the entire project is quite different from the projects that we internally own and manage. We hope when we use software outsourcing solution as an advantaged service, we can ensure the smooth cooperation. We will try to fulfill both sides’economic benefit and testing demands itself. Then we can provide flexible, efficient and qualified testing service to Sony Ericsson. But how to develop software outsourcing itself is out of the scope of this paper. We will mention outsourcing, vendor and other key words frequently but it is within Sony Ericsson reliability testing laboratory and focusing on test execution mainly.In conclusion, mobile phone software reliability testing is a new topic as well as a complex project. Hopefully we can provide some useful reference for future similar study.
