A Study Of Adaptive User Interface Design For Mobile Phone Based On Context-Awareness

Mobile phone interface, which serves as the interaction interface between people and mobile phone, its usability and user experience are affected by many context factors, including users, devices and the environment, etc. Most of the traditional mobile phone user interface only use a single interface pattern of design for all users. So in the past, basically, context factors have not been taken into account. This can not meet the needs of the users. Adaptive user interface (AUI) design takes context into account as an important factor. Without increasing the burden on the user’s cognition and operation, AUI design can perceive context automatically. Then it will provide adaptive services to users according to the results of perception. This intelligent, adaptive interface mechanism will overcome the limitations of mobile devices’interaction. As a result, AUI design really meet the individual needs of users and improve the interface usability.This paper focused on design of mobile phone’s AUI based on context-awareness. By researching related technology and theory about AUI design and human-computer interaction based on context-awareness, this paper summarizes the corresponding user-centric design principles of AUI design. And on this basis, a design model of AUI for mobile phone based on context-awareness has been proposed creatively in this paper. What’s more, an example with high quality has been designed. In the model mentioned above, the design of mobile phone’s AUI is divided into four levels:concept level, interaction level, presentation level and evaluation level. On the concept level, this study introduced the context factors in the definition of the design concept, and then constructed a logical of function interaction on the interaction level. After it, the study analyzed the AUI design of interface by combining with information visualization techniques on the presentation level. And a design model of interface pattern has been defined according to the results of analysis in this level. Finally, through the analysis of user feedback recorded in their operating log, the study finished the dynamic adjustment and improvement for adaptive process in the evaluation level. Moreover, using this model, this paper also completed the design of AUI combined with a project that is called PIM—concept contacts product in mobile phone. Evaluation results show that most of users had a higher satisfaction and operation performance with the adaptive interface. This verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the model, and the model can be used to guide the design of mobile phone’s AUI which is based on context-awareness.
