Optical micro-ring resonators have been one of the research focuses in the field of integrated optics. It is the potential basic component with function diversity, compact structure and excellent wavelength distinction. A novel micro-ring resonator based on twin-core fibers is firstly proposed and studied. The primary achievements in this paper are as follows:1. The basic principles, research situation and the main application of the micro-ring resonators are summarized and the purpose of studying the all-fiber micro-ring resonators is illustrated.2. The traditional principles of the micro-ring resonators based on semiconductors are studied. The transmission function of the single ring resonator is presented by coupling mode theory with formula of the key factors given out. The transmission functions of series-coupled resonators and parallel-coupled resonators are deduced by transmission matrix.3. The characteristic of the novel micro-ring resonators are illustrated. The transmission function of the single-ring is deduced by transmission matrix. The key factors such as FSR,FWHM, Central Wavelength are presented. The structure of the series-coupled resonators and parallel-coupled resonators is illustrated and the transmission function is deduced.4. The relationship between single-ring transmission function and loss, length is analyzed. FSR FWHM are studied and are optimally designed which means when length is between450um and550um, FSR is over18nm and FWHM is below2nm.5. The transmission functions of series-coupled resonators and parallel-coupled resonators are studied. The conclusion shows that the extinction ratio can be increased by using series-coupled resonators. And a conclusion of increasing the stability of central wavelength is got by using series-coupled resonators. The flat characteristics can be improved by using parallel-coupled resonators and the box-like filters are obtained by adjusting the ratio of the numbers of the2units in parallel-coupled resonators.6. The characteristic of the add-drop filter composed by the novel micro-ring resonators are analyzed in a WDM system with10Gb/s and4wavelengths. The crosstalk of the channels can be decreased by using series-coupled resonators.
