With the development of information technology, control network system based onfield bus has become an important field in automation. As an important part of themonitoring and alarm system, extended alarm system for engine room has become one ofthe key technologies in automation and intelligent network of marine engine room.An extended alarm system for marine engine room based on the CAN bus andCortex-M3is presented and realized in this paper, which includes main control andextended units. Multiple real-time alarm signals can be responded by sound and lightaccording to the predetermined rules, and if the alarm signal did not get reasonable andeffective treatment within a scheduled time, the alarm signal will be extended to the all theunits. There are two control units for redundancy in this system. The on duty main controlunit can be changed from one to another not only artificially but also automatically when theworking control unit does not work properly. The system used NXP LPC1766as the mainmicrocontroller, with CAN bus as the communication bus, and achieved real-timemonitoring, alarm, display, control, communication and integration. The overall system design, hardware design, and software design of this extendedalarm system is introduced in detail in this paper. Modular design brings convenient for thesystem debugging and modification. In software design, structured programming designmethod is adopted to make the software has good modularity, readability and can bemodified easily, convenient system for expansion and upgrading. At the same time, someanti-interference measures are presented in the hardware and software design for the marineengine room serious electromagnetic environment, which improves reliability and stabilityof the system. The system test shows that this extended alarm system has achieved the expectedresults. The structure of the whole system is reasonable. The system runs stably, reliably, and has good expansibility, connectivity, and has good practical value and wide applicationprospect. Finally, some problems and treatment methods during the whole extended alarmsystem design process and debugging period are summarized, the system design process andthe test results are analyzed and the subject of the follow-up work is put forward.
