With the growth of digital information,the morden computer systems are required to offerhigher performance,lower energy consumption,smaller volume,bigger capacity,and etc.In orderto meet the requirements,a lot of approaches have been proposed.Data compression is one ofthem.Due to the compression technology,the computer system can offer higher bandwidth,biggercapacity,extended life span of computer components,and lower energy consumption.In this paper,we firstly discuss the mechanisms of different compression algorithms andexplore the impacts of different parameters on the system performance.For example, we evaluatethe impacts of different block size on the compression performance, compressiontime,decompression time, CPU utilization rate, RAM utilization.Secondly, we analyze thecharacteristics of eight different memory traces.We achieve following conclusions(1)Thememory data generated by space software contains a high proportion of zeros.(2)The memorydata produced by characteristics software contains a high proportion of English characteristics init’s ASCII code.(3)the entropy of evicted memory pages is higher than that of fetched memorypages.We also analyze the distribution of ASCII character and continuous zeros to explore thecharacteristics of memory data.Finally,according to the above experimental result, we discuss thecorrelation between memory data characteristics and different compression algorithms.We alsodiscuss the potential solutions to further enhance the work in this paper.
