Recently, the study of mobile ad hoc network in the field of computer networktechnology is very popular. Routing protocol as a key technology of mobile ad hocnetworks, attracts much attention. Mobile ad hoc network combines the technology ofmobile communication and computer network, it has no fixed infrastructure, anddoesn’t rely on any central control devices, it’s a dynamic topology network, sorouting in such networks is difficult. Routing protocol is responsible for discoveringroutes for data packets, and forwards them to destination nodes. The design of routingprotocol is related to the performance of mobile ad hoc network,e.g. delay, output andpacket delivering ratio. Nowadays, there are many kinds of routing protocols in thefield. Geographic routing protocols have a better performance in efficiency andscalability. It is more suitable for big mobile ad hoc networks. However, a gooddesign of location service scheme is very important to the efficiency of geographicrouting protocol.Based on the strongpoints of the existing location service protocols, wepropose the Region-based Uniform Distributed Location Service protocol (RUDLS).It devides the whole network into a two-level structure, and choose location serversfor every level, nodes in the network send their location information to their locationservers, and location servers in level one send the updated location information totheir location servers in level two. The location servers in level two uniformlydistribute their copy of location information to location servers in several other leveltwo. RUDLS scheme can provide the high availability and get low overhead byreducing the global update frequency of location information. Finally, we use NS-2to simulate the XYLS, GLS, GHLS and RUDLSprotocols. The simulation results show that RUDLS has better performance thanXYLS, GLS, GHLS in scalability, update and query overhead, location informationquery success ratio and query delay.
