With the development of science and technology, urban traffic has entered the intelligent era,and the concept of intelligent traffic system has been present. The accurate positioning ofvehicles and the transmitting of information are important parts of intelligent traffic.Global Positioning System is the most developed and the most widely application field ofpositioning technologies, but the boundedness of “dead zone” restricts its application on urbanvehicle positioning. RFID, Radio Frequency Identification, by reading the tag of geographicposition information, can get the positioning data in arbitrary precision and then can make up theshortage of GPS in vehicle positioning. GPRS has the advantages of high transmission rate,widely covered network and the support of varies of network protocol, which are appropriate forwireless transmission of information.(1) In this paper, we first introduce basic theories of RFID_GPS vehicle-mountedpositioning system, and analyse their research and development status.(2) In allusion to the limitation of “dead zone” of current GPS, we propose a system ofprimarily GPS positioning, assisted by RFID positioning. In order to get better surveillance anddispatch of vehicles, the vehicle-mounted terminal using the GPRS technology to connect withsurveillance center.(3) Based on ideas above, our vehicle-mounted positioning system is using moduler designmethod, which devides the whole system to certain functional modules, design and test eachseparately.(4) Using ARM processor as the hardware environment and Using embedded Linuxoperating system as the software environment, we solve the tasks of GPS and RFID positioninginformation gathering and processing, and transmit the processed information to surveillancecenter through GPRS, so as to achieve the real-time surveillance of vehicles.
