The sensor network composed by massive low reliability and limited resources node is self-organization network which is mainly applied in many field such as military surveillance, environmental monitor, industry detection, medical health monitor and so forth. The sensor node cooperates with each other to carry through data acquisition, transmission and processing, and then to make the sensed data accurate and authentic. Coverage control is one of foundational questions of sensor network, for it regards as a measurement of sense service performance of sensor networks. When sensor networks are applied into target detection, data fusion technology could effectively improve the coverage performance of the sensor networks. Consequently, there exists quite vital practical significance to study the intrinsic relationship between data fusion and coverage control of sensor network.First of all, we introduce the research background and significance of sensor networks , analyze the research situation of the coverage control in sensor networks, and point out the primary research problem of coverage control presently. Simultaneously, we quite thoroughly analyze the related elementary theory and method of the area coverage control and data fusion. Then, based on probability sense model of the exponential decay law,we mainly analyze the intrinsic relationship between data fusion and coverage performance in this paper. The concept of virtual radius of sensor node is put forward to quantize the improvement on network coverage performance caused by data fusion, while the concept of fusion coverage and virtual deployment are proposed to compute cover region of sensor networks as well. We explore two approximate calculation ways of coverage region and evaluate their effects on node density, when sensor nodes are deployed virtually in the regular polygon way, and in this way, as the theoretical analysis indicates, the number of node which are participated in fusion process of virtual radius is no more than six. Otherwise data fusion will not reduce the node density, on the contrary, it will have a negative effect on the node density. In view of the above theory, we design an improved maximum set covers algorithm which is based on data fusion to schedule sensor nodes to cover or fuse cover every point in the region, and also propose an improved and energy-efficient data fusion algorithm to reduce energy consumption in fusion process as far as possible. Finally, we carry on some related simulation in the MATLAB platform. The experimental results indicate that the method of data fusion based on probability sense model of the exponential decay law could improves the detection performance and coverage performance efficiently, meanwhile, it could prolong sensor network’s lifetime effectively.
