With the development of communication technologies and the increment of users’demands, network traffics are gradually diversified. This makes various types of communication networks coexist, resulting in the convergence of heterogeneous networks. Internetworking heterogeneous networks becomes a problem needs to be solved urgently due to the ever-increasing demand of convergenced networks. The multi-network gateway has the capability of high-speed data processing and provides a lot of interfaces, which is one of the key equipments realizing the interconnection of heterogeneous networks. It is thus quite necessary to design a good management software to effectively manage all interfaces of a multi-network gateway. As a transmission method saving the network bandwidth, IP multicast is not widely used due to its reliability, one of the primary bottlenecks. Therefore, the research of reliable IP multicast is of great importance.Based on the project entitled as the research on the key technologies of a multi-network gateway and its prototype, this dissertation firstly presents the progress and status of the relevant researches both at home and abroad, the principles of the multi-network gateway management software and reliable IP multicast, as well as the hardware structure and software development platform of the multi-network gateway. Secondly, on the basis of the former work from our study group, a general description on the functions and components of the multi-network gateway management software is given in the dissertation. The emphasis is laid on the design and realization of the management software of the multi-network gateway, including both the MFC man-machine interface programs and the programs running in the Xscale core, along with its test methods and results obtained. Besides, a detailed discussion on Multicast Transmission Control Protocol (MTCP), a classical reliable IP multicast protocol, is given. On the anasis of the mechanisms adopted and shortcomings of MTCP, several improvements on MTCP in the mechanisms of the detection of packet loss and the retransmission of lost packets, the buffer management scheme and the fairness among the receivers with different data receiving rates are also studied. An analysis on the advantages of the modified MTCP over MTCP is also made.
