During recent years, Internet has seen explosive growth with the fast development of communication terminals, and has more and more important place in people's life. Due to the growing importance of the Internet, a new network, such as satellites network, should be designed to facilitate its integration with the Internet. A wide variety of network applications require the use of reliable multicast protocols to disseminate data from one source to a potentially large number of receivers simultaneously. Broad satellite is an ideal transmission medium to support such applications. In this paper, we are interested in applying reliable multicast in satellite network and propose a novel set of Satellite Scalable Reliable Multicast Protocols (SSRMP) for data transfer over broadband satellite network. The starting point of this paper is the basic principle of multicast. First, it introduces why multicast can save the bandwidth via unicast. Some key techniques about multicast are discussed then, and the detail analysis is given to the reliable multicast. ACK and NACK as the basic for reliable multicast protocols are also discussed, and the scheme of NACK compression is discussed especially.A novel set of Satellite Scalable Reliable Multicast Protocols (SSRMP) is proposed in this paper for data dissemination over broadband satellite network. The SSRMP can be sorted in to SSRMP_PIPELINE, SSRMP_OBP and SSRMP_PBB with and without the aid of satellite onboard processing and buffering. These protocols employ a judicious combination of ACK and NACK, and use packet lever FEC for local error recovery. Performance evaluation by simulations under different BER and numbers of users shows that SSRMP generally outperforms RMTP and achieves high scalability.
